Following the end of the second phase of the eased lockdown, the federal government is considering locking down 18 local government areas in the country to curtail the spread of COVID-19.

According to Daily Trust, this was disclosed on Monday, June 29, by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and chairman Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha, after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.

Boss Mustapha speaking with State House reporters after leading his team to brief the Nigerian leader said the lockdown was necessary to enable aggressive testing and management of the virus.

Out of 774 local governments in Nigeria 18 have been identified as making up 60% of the confirmed cases in the country.

He also said that 80% of the infections affected the age bracket of 31 to 40 years which makes up a very active part of the population.

He stressed that the task force is concerned about the remaining 20%, adding that everything was being done to protect the elderly and those with underlying medical conditions.

Meanwhile, MaxTech reported that after three months of hues and cries, the federal government on Monday, June 29, finally lifted the ban on interstate movement effective from Wednesday, July 1.
