Foods That Can Reduce The Risk of Getting Cancer



Cancer leads to over 70 000 deaths every year in Nigeria. The most common forms of cancer are breast cancer, cervical and prostrate cancer.



One important way to reduce the risk is to monitor what you eat.



This article looks at 4 foods that have been known to reduce the risk of getting cancer.



1. Fruits and vegetables:
The National Cancer Institutes reports that those who eat foods rich with fruits and vegetables have a lower risk of getting cancers of the mouth, pharynx, larynx, esophagus, stomach, and lung.

Fruits such as carrots, oranges and berries and vegetables such as broccoli, and leafy greens contain antioxidants that prevent DNA damages.



2. Beans:
Beans are rich in fiber, which may reduce the risk of colorectal tumors and colon cancer. Beans contain several phytochemicals that may protect the body's cells against damage that can lead to cancer.


3. Nuts and Seeds:
Nuts and seeds provide protein, dietary fiber, and omega-3 fatty acids that is found in walnuts, chia seeds and ground flax seeds. Different nuts and seeds also contain a variety of different vitamins and minerals, such as vitamin E and magnesium.
Studies have shown that eating peanuts, walnuts, almonds and seeds most days may help reduce the risk of certain cancers, including colorectal, endometrial and pancreatic cancer


4. Fish:
A study published on National Library of Medicine suggested that the consumption of even relatively small amounts of fish is a favorable indicator of the risk of several cancers, especially of the digestive tract.

Eating fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as mackerel, tuna, salmon and sardines help to prevent inflammation in cancer prone areas of the body.
